• BuddyPress for One (and All!)
Back in April of last year, Matt posted here on the dev blog about the release of BuddyPress 1.0, a plugin that adds a social networking layer to an installation of WordPress MU. Many people were excited about the idea, but were unable to experiment with BuddyPress because they ran single installations of WordPress rather [...]
  • Menus, the Merge, and a Patch Sprint!
A Report from the 3.0 Development Cycle Menus There’s been a flurry of blog posts about the integration of the WooThemes Custom Navigation into WordPress core, so I thought it was time we posted the official word. For 3.0, the main user-facing feature we wanted to include was a better site menu management system. Currently, dealing with [...]
  • WordPress On The Go
I like to moderate comments when I’m waiting for something: a checkout clerk to help me, the dentist to call me back to the office, a soy chai to be made. I don’t lug my laptop everywhere I go,* so I love it that we have mobile apps that make this possible. I don’t know [...]
  • WordPress 2.9.2
Thomas Mackenzie alerted us to a problem where logged in users can peek at trashed posts belonging to other authors. If you have untrusted users signed up on your blog and sensitive posts in the trash, you should upgrade to 2.9.2.  As always, you can visit the Tools->Upgrade menu to upgrade.

Although My K2 WordPress sites appeal to many for their simplicity, many other people prefer all the bells and whistles sites

So I am now using producing more conventional web sites as well as the simple sites like au.wpk.com

WP K2 guru

January 4th, 2009

I am a newbie
The K2 theme and wordpress 2.7 are all new to me

I do not know how to code
I do now know how to change the colour of text in a banner page menu

An expert answered my first question in the K2 support group
I asked how could I prevent the “Posted By” and other text appearing on each post
He told me to copy the style sheet duelling sidebars that I had already chosen in Appearance, K2 options
Rename that that css file and put it in the /styles  folder
Add some code to it that he posted
Activate the new style sheet in Appearance, K2 options

Bingo. It worked of course

My next question was how could I prevent “No Comments” text appearing
The code was posted to the K2 support group
I copied that code to my own new very small style sheet

Bewdy. It worked again of course
By this time I realized the advantage of using my own style sheet

I could do what I wanted and still be able to update K2 to the next verrsion without having to start all over again

Next I noticed an expert recommending a tool for firefox that would let me change or add code in my style sheet that had an immediate change on the web page I was viewing
The change being temporary unless I saved it and uploaded
There was more than one tool available
The tool I eventually settled on is the Web Development Tool and it sits up the top in Firefox until I am ready to use it
I usually go directly to CSS edit to play and choose the tab for my own css file
It took me a while to realize that I had to pull the border of FireFox up before I could actually see and change the code
The temporary change on the web page is quite dramatic and fast
I realized quickly I could experiment with text size and spacing in the header using this method
My style sheet is still tiny so it is easy for me to follow the changes

So my advice to anyone new to K2 is
Copy the .css style sheet you have chosen
Rename it
I had to download and upload using my normal ftp methods
The experts have a quicker method
Then activate it in the Appearance, K2 options, styles drop down list

Get a web development tool

And always post a URL with your question so that the very generous experts here can quickly see what you mean

I have used my site www.APO.net
to make changes to the  banner page menu text appearance

I am a newbie to images as well

I would now like to know if it is possible to choose what pages appear on the banner menu by changing my css?

And I have noticed a few people have asked about the css author stuff that will be added to the footer and where exactly does it go
They did not appear to get an answer
I would like to know that too

Using Wordpress

The aim of this site is to provide an introduction to using Word Press to create web sites rather than blogs

I first came across Word Press in 2004

It was beyond me meagre IT skills to instal

For a start I didn’t even use a host

So I tried the free version where Word Press hosts it for you

It was a dismal failure for me

So much has changed on Word Press since then

It is a testamemt to the power of open source software how quickly this application known as Word Press has progressed

Personally I have moved forwards in leaps and bounds too

I now have a host that costs about $5 a month for an unlimited number of domain names

This host includes a one click installation of Word Press

There is no need for me to instal data bases. The host does all that for me.
